WHO IS MAKEUP GIRL???
Makeup Girl started as two piece indie rock band 10 years ago in Mount Rainier MD, 3 blocks from DC. It was actually just Brody (vox, guitar) and Caleb (drums) for a brick but then we decided that kinda sucked so we starting adding people. We had a lot of other members (Billy Brophy, Ryland Heagy, and Bryce Dubayah to name a few) and band names but settled on Makeup Girl 3 years ago when we released our first EP. So there's actually a lot of history lol but we we're all like 14 so it didn't really go anywhere...But now we have a solid lineup with Johnny Leader on guitar and Avery Steck on bass, and we are ready to make music.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST EP, LIVING SAFE. HOW DO YOU LIVE “UNSAFE” ???? THE MUSIC VIDEO TO THE TITLE TRACK IS AMAAAAAZING.
Haha I guess "living safe" is supposed to mean doing what everyone tells you to do and staying on one track. So the best way to live unsafe would be to say fuuuck that and do what you really want/are driven to do :) But you know don't just take our advice...
We definitely put more work into this EP than any of our other ones and I think it really shows through in the music. We wanted to use many different styles because that's what we're all about, but we still wanted to make an EP that flows and tells a story. Super happy with how it turned out and the response we've gotten so far!!!!
Thank you so much about the “Living Safe” video!!! That video was directed by Vincent Juagan and we were stunned when we first saw it. So beautiful :') that man is really going places and everyone should check him out!
YOU RECENTLY HAD A RELEASE SHOW FOR THIS EP - HOW DID THAT TURN OUT? (The Dune Flowers are the HOMIES)!
We were blown away by the amount of support that we got from everyone involved with that show! It was really an amazing night. All the bands played insane sets and the crowd was so hype. It was also one of the first bigger shows we've put together on our own so it was awesome to see it turn out so well.
We definitely owe a lot to the Dune Flowers (the real homies!!), the Slim Jimmies, and Bottled Up. Also wanna thank Elijah Bedsaul and his friend (sorry I don't know his name...) for putting on an amazing liquid light show behind every band! It was sick.
THE DC MUSIC SCENE. HOW HAS IT INFLUENCED YOU + HOW HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO IT?? HAVE YOU PLAYED SHOWS ELSEWHERE YET?
The DC music scene has definitely been a big influence on all of our members even before putting the band together. There’s just so much great music in the city that it’s honestly hard not to get wrapped up in that culture. I like to think we’ve added a little bit haha, mostly I would say that we add to it by taking a lot of influence from DC music and bringing it to what we are doing now. We've played a few shows in Philly and VA but really haven't played too far from the DMV. Looking forward to doing that!
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A BAND IN THE 21ST CENTURY??
Yeah great question. I think social media has definitely changed the band management game....It can be a little overwhelming with everything so connected these days but I feel grateful that we are able to be so independent with our music. I think that’s definitely thanks to the internet/everything being so readily available to figure out. Some things are great like easily being able to reach out to fans/other bands, but at the same time everything you do is so public and it seems like some weird popularity contest. It's very strange. I don't know this world is crazy man :/
UPCOMING SHOWS?? ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT OUR READERS TO LOOK OUT FOR????
Helllll yeah we actually just finished tracking our next EP so look out... ~3 months ;) other than that we have some sweet shows lined up for the summer (Lunar Vacation Aug 5th @ Songbyrd!!!!) and are releasing a video for our song “Walking Outside” within the next couple months. Looking forward to it B^)
