MOTHERS: "PINK AND BLUE"
Athens-natives Mothers have released a cover of the Mountain Goats’ “Pink and Blue” via the seventh episode of the “I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats” podcast. The single is their first work since their highly acclaimed, debut album, When You Walk A Long Distance, You Are Tired in 2016. The release is also the first glimpse into what the band will sound like following the addition of Art Contest and Isaak Pancake drummer, Garrett Burke, and the band’s recent relocation from Athens, GA to Philadelphia.
“Pink and Blue” is a bit of a deep cut of the band’s 2002 album, All Hail West Texas. The original is a lo-fi recording which finds Mountain Goats vocalist John Darnielle alone with his acoustic guitar, tailored to a singer-songwriter palette. Mothers reimagine “Pink and Blue” with an almost trap influenced drum section, and wispy guitar riffs placed a little nestled into the mix. Molly Guldemond’s vocals are pronounced, placed at the forefront, and direct the track. Overall, the cover is inventive and insightful. We can only hope that this means more activity from Mothers in 2018.
You can find “Pink and Blue” on all major streaming services and more Mountain Goats covers on the podcast’s page, which includes a different cover in each episode. You can also catch The Mountain Goats support their new album, Goats, this April as they tour the east coast.
