HAVE A NICE DAY: A PITTSBURGH COLLECTION BY CRAFTED SOUNDS
With all the political discourse that has steadily been increasing in the nation, many people have responded by trying to ensure feelings of community and empowerment as well as solidarity. As of recently, members of the music industry (on small and large levels) have been working hard to make their voices heard and express their own solidarity with organizations threatened to be defunded and disregarded.
An inspirational example of such activism being done on a smaller scale is tape label Crafted Sounds’ upcoming release, Have A Nice Day: A Pittsburgh Collection. Similar to the movement of many labels and bands donating percentages of their online sales to Planned Parenthood, Crafted Sounds is releasing a compilation tape whose digital profits (and 50% of physical profits) will be donated to the Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania.
Have A Nice Day is composed of songs, demos, a cover, and even a live recording by various Pittsburgh artists. The compilation itself isn’t meant to be political but rather focus on highlighting the sound and diversity of the music scene in Pittsburgh. This diversity is conveyed through the combination of genres featured on the tape: lo-fi, experimental, and garage punk to name a few. Nonetheless, it is these two purposes of the tape that expresses the inspiration to contribute locally and on a small scale that is in the end a part of something much bigger.
The compilation has a fluidity to it from track-to-track, as each song has its own respective but similar level of energy to it, making it a comfortable listen.
Some songs on it worth noting:
“It Could Be You” - Rue
An indie pop-rock love song about being unsure about love
“Disorder” (Cover) - Surf Bored
Cover of a post-punk favorite with a hint of surf rock
“Red Colored Elegy” - pinstripe sunny
An unearthly bedroom pop tune that incorporates sounds of running water along with other more conventional sounds
“Waxed” - Spacefish
A hypnotizing american gothic/experimental tune that gives off Glass Animal vibes (but darker)
There will be a limited run of physical cassette tapes so make sure to order yours as soon as possible.
Shortly after the release there will be two benefit shows for Planned Parenthood with bands from the compilation:
Release Show @ Dogfunk (South Oakland - Pittsburgh) Thursday 3/2
Jack Stauber, Pinstripe Sunny, Side Ape, Surf Bored
Benefit Show @ The Bushnell (North Oakland - Pittsburgh) Saturday 3/18
